A chemical reaction occurring in an aqueous solution, the formation of insoluble salt due to the combination of two ions, that reactions are precipitation reactions. In these reactions, two soluble compounds combine to form one soluble and insoluble solid which is precipitated out. This insoluble solid is called a precipitate. Complete step by step solution: When an aqueous solution of potassium chloride KCl, when mixed with silver nitrate AgNO3 solution an insoluble AgCl formed as a white substance. KCl(aq)+AgNO3(aq)→KNO3(aq)+AgCl(s)↓ This is an example of a double displacement reaction. Because potassium ion and silver ion displaces mutually in the product formation. Double displacement reaction is defined as in a reaction two compounds react with an exchange of ions from two new compounds. This reaction occurs in solution and the product formed as precipitated out as solid. This means an insoluble solid precipitate formed due to a combination of two soluble ionic compounds in an aqueous solution. This type of reaction is called a precipitation reaction. Hence, this reaction is an example of precipitation reactions and double displacement reactions. Note: Precipitation reactions are utilized in qualitative and quantitative analysis of solutions. All aqueous reactions are not precipitation reactions; those obey solubility rules before estimating the rate of products and net ionic equation. For example, silver nitrate, sodium chloride is soluble solids, but when we add both salts silver chloride is formed as white precipitation.
