For selcting a school instead of total result number you should look for percentage success and secondly can interact personally with the students already studying in that school please do approve this reply so that i may help you further

This totally depends on what criteria you are judging the school. On average marks basis mean is appropriate. While on comparison wise like 50 % students have scored 80% number then median is perfect
