An equation is considered linear if it satisfies two conditions:

The highest power of the variable(s) in the equation is 1.
All terms in the equation are either constants or multiples of the variable(s) without any exponent or multiplication between them.
For example, the equation y = 2x + 3 is linear because the variable x has a power of 1 and all terms (2x and 3) satisfy the conditions.

On the other hand, an equation is nonlinear if it fails to meet at least one of the conditions mentioned above. This means that either the highest power of the variable is not 1 or there is a multiplication or exponentiation involving the variable(s).

For example, the equation y = x^2 + 2 is nonlinear because the variable x has a power of 2, violating the first condition.

Another example of a nonlinear equation is y = 2x + 3x^2 since it involves both linear (2x) and nonlinear (3x^2) terms, violating the second condition.

In summary, to determine if an equation is linear or nonlinear, you need to examine the power of the variables and the presence of any nonlinear operations, such as exponents or multiplications between variables.
