The heat rays of the sun (infra-red) can pass through the carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere. After reflection from the earth they are not allowed to leave the atmosphere. The trapped heat rays in the carbon dioxide from a warm blanket around the earth. This effect is known as greenhouse effect.
