To bisect a line segment of length 7 cm, you can follow these steps using a compass and a straightedge (ruler):

Step 1: Draw the Line Segment
Draw a straight line segment AB of length 7 cm. Use your ruler to ensure it's accurately measured.

Step 2: Create a Perpendicular Bisector
A perpendicular bisector is a line that cuts the given line segment in half and is perpendicular to it. To construct the perpendicular bisector, follow these steps:

a. From point A, use your compass to draw an arc that is more than half the length of the line segment. This arc should intersect the line segment above and below it. Label these two points of intersection as C and D.

b. Without changing the compass width, place the compass tip on point C and draw another arc that intersects the first arc you drew. Label this point of intersection as E.

c. Repeat the same process from point D to draw another arc that intersects the first arc at a different point. Label this point of intersection as F.

Step 3: Draw the Perpendicular Bisector
a. Use your ruler to draw a straight line that passes through points E and F. This line is the perpendicular bisector of the line segment AB.

Step 4: Label the Bisected Point
a. Where the perpendicular bisector intersects the original line segment AB, label this point as M. Point M is the midpoint of AB, and the line segment has been bisected into two equal parts, AM and MB, each of length 3.5 cm.

You have now successfully bisected the line segment AB into two equal parts using a perpendicular bisector.
