I am sure after reading this you will not only feel astonished but also will start loving it as chapter which otherwise was boring.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #003366;\"><strong>But before starting on our tour let\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s first know a little about these elements!!<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>WHAT ARE P-BLOCK ELEMENTS???<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>P-Block elements are seen on the right side of the periodic table and consist of six columns. They are so called because in these the valence electron which is commonly known as outermost electron enters the p-orbital. This block is a home of 35 elements and is the only block having a blend of all three varieties of elements namely Metals, Nonmetals and Metalloids.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The following figure clarifies it further :-<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/PeriodicTable-p-Blocks.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9254\" src=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/PeriodicTable-p-Blocks-1024x571.png\" alt=\"PeriodicTable p - Blocks\" width=\"1024\" height=\"571\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now, let\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s understand about each group in detail:-<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Group 13<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9260 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-1.jpg\" alt=\"P-1\" width=\"226\" height=\"170\" \/><\/a>Group 13 is also known as <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Boron family or ICOSAGENS<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span> It consists of Boron (B), Aluminum (Al), Gallium (Ga), Indium (In), Thallium (Tl) and the less known ununtrium (Uut). The group has one metalloid \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00cb\u0153Boron\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 whereas the rest of the elements are metals. Though this group contains \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00cb\u0153Aluminium\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 which is the most abundant metal on Earth yet the other metals lying below it were not found until 19<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p>The major use of Boron lies in glass making industry and pottery using a very common compound called <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>BORAX \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0[Na<sub>2<\/sub>B<sub>4<\/sub>O<sub>5<\/sub>(OH)<sub>4<\/sub><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00b7<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>8H<sub>2<\/sub>O]<\/em><\/strong><\/span> which is found in lake beds. They are also used in soap and detergent industry.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9261 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-2.jpg\" alt=\"P-2\" width=\"304\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You know what, Boron fibers are so light and stiff that they can be used as structural reinforcing material in US space shuttles and also in frames of lightweight bicycles and speedboats which are used in racing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9262 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-3.jpg\" alt=\"P-3\" width=\"275\" height=\"184\" \/><\/a>It\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s also used in flare guns. Remember the green flare which is fired from guns in case of emergency\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u00a6yes that\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s boron.<\/p>\n<p>Boron undoubtedly has wide functions but now let\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s move further and discover about other elements of the same group.<\/p>\n<p>Aluminum has wide usage. It also is an important material for both transportation (Since it\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s light in weight thus is used to make airplane and helicopter bodies which also reduces in energy consumption.. Now that\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s called double attack!!) and transmission (US power line is of aluminum cables since it has high conductivity).<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Group 14<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9264 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-5.jpg\" alt=\"P-5\" width=\"122\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Group 14 is also known as <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Carbon family or TETRAGENS<\/em><\/strong>.<\/span> It consists of Carbon (C), Silicon (Si), Germanium (Ge), Tin (Sn), Lead (Pb) and less known Ununquadium (Uuq). Three of its first five elements namely Carbon, tin and lead has been known to mankind since ages. Even the oldest known writings on papyrus in Egyptian civilization were found to be of the ink made from lampblack.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-6.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9255 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-6.png\" alt=\"P-6\" width=\"85\" height=\"85\" \/><\/a>You all are already aware of Carbon since it is nearly in every biological compound which makes up our body systems like organs, organelles, cells. It\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s widespread use is in circuit boards of computers and cell phones and in building and construction material.<\/p>\n<p>Also, it\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s used in many healthcare (lubrication of syringe needles), personal care (cosmetics) and textile industry.<\/p>\n<p>Not only these but the so-called poisonous substance \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00cb\u0153lead\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 is also a popular element which is used as coloring pigment (in sindoors) , as anti-knocking agent and in rechargeable batteries !!<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GROUP 15<u> <\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-8.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9257 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-8.jpg\" alt=\"P-8\" width=\"101\" height=\"145\" \/><\/a>Group 15 is also known as <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Nitrogen family or PNICTOGENS<\/em><\/strong><\/span>. It consists of Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Arsenic (As), Antimony (Sb), Bismuth (Bi) and less known Ununpentium (Uup).You know what Antimony was the first element from this group to be obtained in elemental form and was used by Egyptians for their eye make-up.<\/p>\n<p>The other elements of this group like nitrogen is widely used as coolant and in the production of ammonia which is a powerful disinfectant for bacteria and fungus.<\/p>\n<p>Also, white Phosphorus is used in rat kill poisons whereas red phosphorus is used in strike plate of matchbox.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>GROUP 16<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-10.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9259 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.askiitians.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/P-10.jpg\" alt=\"P-10\" width=\"200\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a>Group 16 is also known as <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><em>Oxygen family or CHALCOGENS<\/em><\/strong><\/span>. It consists of Oxygen (O), Sulphur (S), Selenium (Se), Tellurium (Te) and Polonium (Po).This group contains the life-sustaining gases called OXYGEN and OZONE!!<\/p>\n<p>The next element Sulphur is used in medicines (sulpha drugs) and the head of matchsticks !!<\/p>\n<p>Phew !! that was a lot about p-block elements.
