21-year old Jitesh Sharma was the third-year student of Chemical Engineering at IIT Bombay. He\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0apparent committed suicide on campus. In his suicide note, Jitesh has mentioned that he was worried\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0about the recent exams he had appeared for and that his results would mar his placement prospects.<\/p>\n

The suicide note also read, “I should not have been in this field. I made a mistake by passing JEE exam.”\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Jitesh was not doing well in his studies and was yet to clear a few papers from previous semesters.<\/p>\n

Jitesh hailed from Rohtak, Haryana. He was suffering from depression and was undergoing counselling\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0at IIT-B. His family was aware that he was under stress. Recently, he sat for two exams that were held on\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0April 24 and April 29, 2015.<\/p>\n

His body was found on the terrace of an IIT Bombay Hostel 15 (different than the one in which he lived)\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0with a container of sodium azide acid, which is highly corrosive in nature. Jitesh’s body has been sent for\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0postmortem on morning of May 3, 2015 and further investigation in the matter is still going on.<\/p>\n

The Powai police claimed that since it is a Sunday, it has not been possible to round up all of Jitesh’s\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0friends and faculty heads yet. The family has been informed about his death and when the classes will\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0resume, police will try to dig more into Jitesh’s academic and social performance. The fact that the\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0suicide note uses both English and Hindi shows that he was under considerable stress.<\/p>\n

According to Jitesh’s friends, he was quite active in extra-curricular activities. Though he was not doing\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0well academically, he had been successfully handling the functioning of the placement cell since last\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0semester.<\/p>\n

This is the second death inside the IIT Bombay campus in less than one year. In September 2014, Aniket\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Ambhore (fourth-year engineering student) fell to his death from the sixth-floor balcony of a hostel. It is\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0suspected to be a suicide case too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
