\"Want<\/a>Days are gone by when only premier institutes like IITs were teaching the basics of setting up own businesses. These days entrepreneurship\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0is on the\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0agenda\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0of even second- rung engineering colleges, and many of them are introducing it as a subject.<\/p>\n

According to Padmaja Ruparel, the president of Indian Angel Network, IAN, “While\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0large companies\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0hire against attrition, start-ups are best positioned to create\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0new jobs”. Encouraging\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0entrepreneurship\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0runs beyond providing incubation centres, Ajai Chowdhry, the chairman of IIT- Patna and the co-founder of HCL says. \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00cb\u0153Premier\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0institutes\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0have the best students and faculty members. During their course work they come up with interesting\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0product ideas\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0but there is little to nurture that\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2 says the architect of the B Tech minor in entrepreneurship initiated at\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0IIT\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Hyderabad in 2011, and now at IIT-Patna.<\/a> He adds that he has been approached by autonomous universities, as well as tier-2\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0colleges\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0from Gurgaon and Bangalore for emulating the same.<\/p>\n

“The idea is to get youngsters excited about entrepreneurship. Although there is a\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0support system\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0for encouraging entrepreneurs, no-one tells youngsters how to go about entrepreneurship,” says Ajit Rangnekar, the dean of\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Indian School of Business. This premier B-school has initiated the\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Technology\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Entrepreneurship Programme, TEP, offered as an elective to\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0engineering students\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0in the third and fourth year.<\/p>\n

The programme is adopted by 26 engineering colleges across\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Andhra Pradesh\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0on-board. It will train\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0students in\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0business education,\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0and combine technical mentorship and prototyping with the support of faculty and business mentors. Aruna Reddy, the associate director of Centre for Entrepreneurship Development at ISB says, “We do not expect students to turn into entrepreneurs immediately after college, as it is not the first career choice for many.”<\/p>\n

The two- year pilot programme in collaboration with the\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0AP Society for Knowledge Networks\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0has\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0set\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0a corpus of Rs.2.5 crore for seed\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0funding\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0business ideas selected at the end of the programme, apart from\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0angel investors\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0willing to participate.<\/p>\n

Similarly, there are initiatives which have been implemented by other states to encourage entrepreneurship among young graduates, like, the Student Entrepreneurship Scheme of\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Kerala government,\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0which incentivises student start-ups\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0with incubation, as well as 20 % relaxation in\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0attendance\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0and grace marks for their initiative.<\/p>\n

The\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Karnataka government’s initiative is to set up infrastructure facilities in tier- II and tier- III cities for development of satellite IT centres and incubators earmarks. 100 crores have been set for VC\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0funding\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0for tech start-ups in the state.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
