History:

Established in the year 1963 in the "pink city" of India, MNIT is one of the 20 NIT's established in different states of the country, governed by the NIT council under the Ministry. Founded in 1962, as a joint venture of the Government of India and Government of Rajasthan, the Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur was formerly known as Malaviya Regional Engineering College. In 1963, the college started functioning from its temporary campus at Pilani admitting 30 students in Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engg each. The college shifted to its present campus at Jaipur in 1965. Since its beginning, the Institute has committed to the cause of technical upgradation of the country in general and of the state of Rajasthan in particular. The college had an authorization to run five year Bachelor of Engineering programmes in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering but the duration of the B.E. Degree Course was changed to 4 years from the academic session 1983-84.

The Institute was upgraded to a National Institute of Technology and was declared Deemed University on June 26, 2002 but with the NIT Act, the Institute is now under The Ministry of Human Resource and Development, New Delhi.

Campus:

MNIT, Jaipur has a well equipped campus covering an area of about 400- acre (1.6 km2). The institute recently became India's first fully wireless Government funded Institute, installed with wired as well as wireless networks linking the entire campus. Apart from the administrative buildings there are hostels and playgrounds huge enough to hold national level techno sports meet.

Hostel:

The hostel apart from providing the students with excellent mess facilities, it believes in maintaining an informal atmosphere for the student-faculty interaction. The admission and administration of the hostel is dealt by the office of the Dean Student Affairs. There are in total 9 hostels, 8 for boys and 1 for the girls. The hostels have 3-seater, 2-seater and single-seater rooms, with facilities ranging from basic amenities like bed, tables and storage space to entertainment facilities like TV viewing rooms, table-tennis etc. For married students pursuing degrees in M. Tech or PhD and wishing to stay close to their families there is also a Married Students' Hostel. There is a mess attached to every hostel which is maintained fully by the students through MNIT Mess Council and Mess Committees, consisting of Mess Secretary and Mess Members and assisted by mess servants.  The administration has also installed Aquaguards Water Filters in every hostel and mess, with an extra Sintex tank.

Departments:

  • The Institute offers 8 four year undergraduate courses of study, Bachelor of Technology degree (in Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Electronics & Communication, Information Technology, Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering)
  • 5 year undergraduate course leading to the Bachelor of Architecture degree with a total of over 1800 students.
  • 9 PG specializations besides doctoral programs with over 300 students.

  

Extra Curricular Activities:

MNIT, in 2007, was the host for one of India's most successful sports meets, MNIT Sports Tournament, with students from all across the country of various NITs and IITs participating in the event. MNIT also hosts 'Blitzschlag', a national level techno-cultural festival. The events draw the attention of thousands of students from all over the country.

Alumni:

The alumni list of MNIT, Jaipur is one long history of successful professionals both in the country as well as internationally. V K Kala is one such alumni member who has shown great perseverance in his field.  He is the current Vice President, of, Ideas "Technology Center of Excellence" in Pune, India and was also a former officer in the Indian Air Force.
