History

VJIT Mumbai LogoVeermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), was established in the year 1887 and is  one  amongst the India's top engineering  institutes. It is situated in Mumbai. VJIT was until 26th January 1997 known as the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute. Since being granted autonomy in July, 2004, VJTI is no longer under the administrative purview of the university, though it is a division of the University of Mumbai and its degree is issued by the Mumbai University. The VJTI is associated to the Mumbai University. The Institute started with the Licentiate Diploma in Textile Technology but over a period of 120 years later it has developed to its present status which has about 3500 students in the campus pursuing their M.Tech.,  B.Tech., Ph.D. degrees and different diploma courses and Post graduate Diploma courses.


Campus

The Institute is sited well within the heart of the city of Mumbai, near the Five Garden area and King’s Circle. On the western side, the institute lies closest to the Dadar Station, and on the Central Line, to Matunga Station (Central) and on the Harbour Line, lying in a radius of 1 km is the  Wadala and Kings Circle Station.
VJTI gives company to other academic Institutes in the vicinity namely, Mumbai University Institute of Chemical Technology, Centre for Industrial Research Cotton Technology (CIRCOT), Don Bosco school and Khalsa College.

Hostel

The institutes' Hostels offer accommodation for a total of about 554 students and are located at the southern end of the campus. They comprise of four blocks A, B, C, and D the accommodation to which is given to 110 new students in all branches every year on the basis of merit-cum-need. There are four messes run by students’ altogether. Hostel fees are based on three seaters, two seaters or single seater including the electricity charges, and the hostel students' amenities fund and medical charges are payable at the beginning of each term. The hostels are provided with dining halls and it is up to the residents to organize themselves into clubs and run the messes under the control of Joint Managing Committee of the students' Messes (JMC). One unique thing to the college is the “Saraswati Vachanalaya” founded on 15th August 1994 which keeps the hostel in order and aware of current issues, social, political, economical and technological changes.

Cultural Activities

There are a huge number of college activities that happens all throughout the year. ‘Enthusia’ is the Sports festival, ‘Pratibimb’, a Cultural festival, ‘Chetna’,  the College Hostel festival, ‘Technovanza’, the Technical festival, and the ‘Janeev’, the  Service to society.
