History

The Punjab Engineering College (Deemed University) Chandigarh was initially established as Mugalpura Engineering College at Lahore (now in Pakistan) on the 9th of November, 1921. The name was later changed to Maclagan Engineering College which started functioning on March 19, 1924. In 1931, the college got affiliated to Punjab University, Lahore. After the partition in 1947, the college was shifted to Roorkee (India) and later renamed as East Punjab College of Engineering. In the year 1950 the word East was dropped and t6he college came to be known by its present name - Punjab Engineering College. The end of December 1953 saw the college shifted to its present campus in Chandigarh, to function under Govt. of Punjab. The college came under the control of Govt. of India through Chandigarh Administration in 1966, when the Union Territory of Chandigarh was formed. In October 2003, the Govt. of India affiliated the Punjab Engineering College as a Deemed to be University. In the year 1994 this institution was adjudged the best technical college in India by the National Foundation of Engineers.

The college comprised of engineering departments of Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering till 1962, but thereafter the college has over the years expanded & five new departments in the fields of Aeronautical Engineering, Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Production Engineering and Computer Science Engineering were added. A new department of Information & Technology has been added in the recent years. In the year 1957, Highway Engineering was introduced as the first post-graduate course in the college. Presently there are eleven post-graduate courses being offered: Masters of Engineering degree in Highways, Structures, Hydraulics and Irrigation, Rotodynamic Machines, Electrical Power Systems, Environmental Engineering (Interdisciplinary), Electronics Metallurgical Engineering and C.I.M. Facilities are provided for both post-graduate studies as well as for regular and part time students . Consultancy services are also offers in different disciplines by the college
 

Campus

The college is situated in Sector 12 at the north end of Chandigarh making it close to the Punjab and Haryana Civil Secretariat, the Punjab University, and Post graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI). The location of the campus is such that it is 9 Km from the Chandigarh Railway station and 5 Km from the main Bus Stand making it convenient for the students.

The college campus extends over an area of 146 acres, and is divided into various functional zones like hostels, Main College Building, Administration Block, Residential Complex for staff and faculty and a shopping centre. In addition to these the college has Lecture theatres, tutorial rooms and drawing halls, the college has an Auditorium, library, computer centre, reading rooms, workshops and well equipped laboratories. The college also has spacious playgrounds, tennis courts, squash courts, swimming pool, gymnasium and a student's centre. The State Bank of India has one of its branches there and there is also a post office in the campus. Adequate facilities of hostels for both boys and girls are available in the campus.

Hostel

There are 4 boys hostel namely Shivalik (1st Year students), Himalaya (2nd Year and 3rd Year students), Kurukshetra (Final Year) students, and Aravali (M.E. students) and 2 girls hostel namely Kalpana Chawla hostel (B.E. girls) and Vindhya (M.E. girls). Each hostel is autonomous with amenities such as reading room, indoor games room, lounge and dining hall and a mess.

The Chief Warden of hostels (the provost) is the in charge of the hostels organizations and is assisted by additional chief warden of hostels, hostel wardens and mess presidents. The discipline in the hostel is looked over by the proctor of the college. Hostel accommodations are provided for all students and residence in the hostels which is compulsory. The students, opting to stay with parents/guardians in the city, are allowed to do so but with the permission of the principal on the basis of a written undertaking form the parents/guardians to the fact that they are to take part in all the extra-curricular activities of the college.

Cultural Activities

Orientation Program:
An orientation program is organized to help inculcate the first year students into the college to get the accustomed to their new ambience. This is usually a four day event which consists of addresses, presentations, workshops and some entertaining sessions. The first day commences with addresses by the Director, DSW and the Dean Academic Affairs which is then followed by a tour of the college to familiarize the students with the different parts of the college. The next two days consists of presentations by the different clubs, technical societies, sports department, NSS, NCC, etc. which helps the students get an in-depth understanding of their working in the college.

Thanksgiving Function The first year students organize with warmth and enthusiasm a Thanksgiving Function for their teachers and senior students who had put in loads of effort to familiarize them with the college. The function comprises of enthralling performances by the talented first year students.

Hostel Function The function sees the residents of hostels coming up with programmes of cultural and fun events in a their own unique way be it in the form of a skit, a dance or a burlesqueetc.

Pecfest 4th Dimension (2nd, 3rd and 4th November) PECFest: The fest have the college going students turning up from all corners and participating in the 108 events which it organizes. The 3 major events that are the highlight of the fest are Groovz, a high stake competitive dance competition; Gliteratti, a fashion show where glam and beauty is at its best, and the TNT Rocknite which has the best of rock bands in the country battle it for glory. The most awaited of all events however is the Star Nite, which features professional artists to performance. Fun events such as Go-Karting, Treasure Hunt, Salsa Workshops and Quizzes are also conducted.

Alumni:

The Alumni of Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh are settled in all parts of the world the world as engineers, technologists, managers and entrepreneurs. With the aim of strengthening its link with the alumni, the institute has set up an Alumni Affairs office also. The pleasant association of the alumni with the institute can be done through:

  1. Interaction with the present students, delivering lectures from experts;

  2. Technical and Academic collaboration in projects;

  3. Organizing Meetings and Reunions;

  4. Honoring of star Alumni;

  5. Organizing College tour with family;

  6. Supporting the PEC.
