NIT- National Institute of Technology Durgapur

History:
The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Durgapur, formerly known as the REC (Regional Engineering College), Durgapur, was established in 1960 by an Act of Parliament as one of the 8 such college designed with a purpose to set the pace for technical education in the nation and to promote national integration. The Institute is situated about 160 KMs north-west of Kolkata on Main Railway-Route of the Howrah-Delhi and overlooking the great Grand-Trunk Road (the National Highway No. 2); the College is spreads over an region of 187 acres of ground. It is co-educational and fully residential college with at present about 400 girls and 2200 boys in residence. The undergraduate intake is about 600 students every year. The Institute is deemed to be University which awards B.Tech, M.B.A., M.C.A., Ph.D. and M.Tech degrees.
Campus:
NIT (National Institute of Technology), Durgapur is a fully residential Institute with its seven hostels for boys and two hostels for girls to accommodate all the admitted students. Then there is the canteen for the students and the staff which is located besides the College main building. The second canteen is located at rear exit of the College Main Building and then there is another canteen near the boys’ hostels. All the teachers including some of the staff members reside in the residential quarters provided by the college. There is also a modern guest house beside the Director's Bungalow. There is a shopping complex which meets the daily requirements of the residents, a model co-educational higher secondary school, a branch of State Bank of India, Canara Bank and a Post-Office all within the Campus.

Hostel:
The NIT, Durgapur is a fully residential Institute. There are in total 9 hostels, seven hostels for boys and two hostels for girls to accommodate all the 2600 admitted students.

Cultural Activities:
NIT, Durgapur students have wide options in the case of extracurricular activities apart from the academic activities. There are quizzes, cultural programs which are conducted from time to time and there is also the matter of publishing their own magazines for which articles are written by the students. The students also keenly co- ordinate with the ‘Training and placement Department’, keeping a boost to the placement statistics of the college. Amongst the various activities of the college there are certain groups which take the overall in charge. The ‘Linux Users' Group, NIT Durgapur’, was created to popularize Linux and Open Source software beyond the silicon branches and to the masses in common. It organizes an annual national level technical convention on Linux and FOSS called "MUKTI", to provide a platform for students, nationwide, to share their knowledge and intellect. There is the ‘Robocity’ where mean machines are developed by the creams of the nation. ‘Aarohan’ is another national level techfest which is also the annual Techno Management festival of NIT Durgapur, which dares one to elevate his limits and to defy one’s capacity. Following all these are some more like yhe ‘Chayanika’, ‘Verve’ (a national level literary carnival), ‘Cine Fest’, and ‘Kartavya’.
Alumni:
The Institute provides perfect platform for young engineers to excel not only technically but also to develop interpersonal skills, leadership and entrepreneur qualities. Students' activities here are multifaceted with various hobby clubs, organize events, publish magazines, do social services, etc running along. Many former students from the Institute are pursuing management courses from prestigious IIMs, ISB, FMS, XLRI, SP Jain, IIFT and MDI Gurgaon and many more clearing GATE every year for M.Tech Courses. The college also has a lot of students studying in universities abroad with many of them graduating from prestigious business schools such as the Ross School of Business Michigan, Kellogg School of Management, University of Chicago GSB, MIT Sloan and the Wharton School.
