NIT - National Institute of Technology Calicut

 
History:

NITC was set up in the year 1961 as a Regional Engineering College, Calicut (CREC). It was only in 1963 with the formation of the Calicut University that the institute was affiliated with the Kerala University. The classes were first held at the Government Polytechnic at West Hill, Calicut before it shifted to its present campus in 1963. The college started with an annual intake of only 125 students for the under-graduate courses. The college moved into the area of Information Technology in as early as 1984 with the commissioning of the multi user PSI Omni system and HCL workhorse PCs. In 1987 the college celebrated 25 years of its existence and also introduced the postgraduate course. The CEDTI was established in the campus the following year, 1988. In 1990 Shankar Dayal Sharma inaugurated the Architecture Department Block. The year also saw the completion of the construction of a computer centre.

Campus:

Situated down in the foothills of the Western Ghats, the National Institute of Technology Calicut (NITC) is located about 22 kilometers north-east of Calicut City. Apart from the academic buildings the campus also has facilities for sports and games, a gymnasium, swimming pool, auditorium, open-air theatre, canteen, bank, post office and a shopping centre. The institute also has a well-equipped library, a digital library, 2 MBPS Internet connectivity, a computer centre that functions round-the-clock, a lecture hall complex, an Entrepreneurship Development Cell (EDC), a Product Development Centre, an Industry-Institute Linkage Cell, a Learning Resources Development Centre, a Centre for Value Education, laboratories and workshops for all kinds of study.

 
Hostels:

NITC is a fully residential institution with its 12 hostels on the campus. There are 10 boys’ hostels which are named by letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, PG I, PG II and 3 girls’ Hostels. The boys' hostels are sited close to the academic area, while the girls' hostels are within the residential campus. The total number of inmates of NITC Hostels is nearly 2245. There is also a mini canteen available in the hostel premises together with STD/ISD facilities which are available in almost all hostels. Each hostel contains its own mess and students are permitted to join the mess of any other hostel.

Cultural Activities:

There are two major annual events National Institute of Technology Calicut, First held in the monsoon semester, ‘Tathva’ which is the techno-management festival and the second one is ‘Ragam’ a cultural festival which is organized in the winter semester. Tathva has over the years become to be regarded as one amongst the major technical festival of South India. Its aim is at inspiring modernism and technical curiosity among student and consciousness among the public. Ragam is the cultural fest of NITC where institutions and universities all over Kerala and exterior the state participate in events as dance competitions and wide ranging as trivia quizzes. There are many student organizations at NITC like the ISTE (Indian Society for Technical Education), Club Mathematica, Students Chapter, the L&D (Literary & Debating Club), IPF (the Industrial & Planning Forum), Enquire (The NITC Quiz Club), ICA (the Indian Cultural Association) and  the Nature Club organize a range of activities during the year.
