IIT Madras

History:
IIT Madras was established with the assistance from German Government which offered all the Technical assistance that was required for setting up an institute of higher education for Engineering in India. The Institute received Technical, Academic and Financial support from West Germany and was the largest educational project sponsored by the country during that period.
The Institute was inaugurated by Prof. Humayun Kabir, the then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs in the year 1959.
Campus:
IIT Madras is spread over an area of 2.5 Km2 (620 acres) which was earlier part of the Guindy National Park. There is also natural within the premises of the Institute and Initiatives have been taken to protect it. The main entrance of the campus is located on Chennai’s Sardar Patel Road and is surrounded by very prosperous states of Adyar and Velachery. IIT Madras is recognized as a separate postal zone. The campus is conveniently located from the Chennai Airport and the Railway station. There are buses plying within the campus to provide easy movement of students in the campus.

Hostel:
Most of the students at IIT Madras stay in the hostels and to accommodate them 16 hostels have been constructed on the campus. Only two of them are for girls and the rest are reserved for boys. Dining facilities have been provided in 2 large halls which can accommodate a huge no of students at any given time. Generally the graduate and undergraduate students are placed in different hostels so as to avoid any altercations between them.

Cultural Activities:
IIT Madras organizes cultural events throughout the year and the annual cultural fest which is held in winter and attracts the largest crowd is called ‘Saarang’. The technical fest is known as ‘shaastra’. Apart from these there are different departmental fests which are organized on regular intervals, the Institute has an open theatre with an enormous capacity of 7,000 people which is packed to capacity on every Saturday when popular movies are screened in the theatre. There is also an opportunity for students to indulge in their hobbies by joining various hobby clubs like speaking club, astro club, dramatics club etc.
