History:

The institute was founded by the Ghanshyam Das Birla as an intermediate college in Pilani Rajasthan. It was opened for preparing highly skilled workers for the technical department of military and industries.  It was converted in to the Birla Engineering College in 1946 and started its two degree programmes in engineering viz. electrical and mechanical engineering.
Afterwards in 1964 Different departments of Birla College like Birla College of arts, Engineering, Commerce, Science and Pharmacy merged to form Birla Institute of Technology and Science, called BITS. Since 2000 BITS started to expand itself and now it has its four centers worldwide.

Campus:

Apart from Pilani BITS it now has its campus in Goa, Dubai and Hyderabad, the main campus being in Vidya Vihar, in Pilani Rajasthan. The campus in Pilani Rajasthan encompasses an area of 328 acres.  The campus has 12 hostels, 7 dining halls, a guest house, Clock tower, Saraswati Mandir, Restaurants, Gym and many more options. The second campus was established in September 2000 in Dubai. The third campus is situated in Goa which the Indian Prime Minster, Dr. Manmohan Singh inaugurated it in 5th of May 2006. It is located on the banks of Zuari River, 2 km from the Air port. The fourth campus was established in Hyderabad in 2008.

Hostel:

Hostels in BITS are known as Bhawans. There are a total of 12 Hostels in BITS-Pilani to provide the accommodation to the large number of students. All the hostels are named after great historical Indian characters. All the hostels are equipped with facilities that the students need including access to computers, internet, television, Sports facilities and uninterrupted power and water supply. There are 11 hostels for the boys (viz Ashok, Bhagirath, Budh, Gandhi, Krishna, Malviya, Ram, Ranapratap, Shankar, Vishwakarma, Vyas) and 1 hostel for the girls called MEERA.

Cultural Activities:

BITS conduct cultural festival every year. These festivals includes all type of events like academics, cultural, sports, technical etc. “A Professions Oriented Gathering Over Educational Experience (APOGEE)”, is a program that includes academic and cultural events, similarly “BITS Open Sports Meet (BOSM)” is the festival for the sports events. It is held in September and totally organized by the students. Participants comes from all over India and sports like Athletics, Badminton, Tennis, T-20 Cricket, Basketball, Chess, Football, Hockey, Table Tennis, Swimming, Volleyball and Weightlifting are held. Other festivals are “CONQUEST”, an event totally related to the business events. “INTERFACE”, is the all India management convention. “OASIS”, is also a festival which is organized entirely by the students and includes cultural events. BITS also have a music and dance festival called “SANGAMAM”, which is organized by the music and dance club of BITS called Ragamalika.

Alumni:

Most of the Alumni from BITS are entrepreneurs; some have achieved leading positions in corporate. There have been many prominent BITS Alumni who are/ have been prominent researchers, writers, social workers and also entertainers.
