New Changes in the JEE Main 2022 Counselling Procedure

JEE Main 2022 counselling procedure will be conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). JoSAA is responsible for managing and regulating the counselling procedure for all of the IITs. For NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, it will conduct JEE Main 2022 counselling sessions along with the CSAB (Centralized Seat Allocation Board).

The counselling procedure of JEE Main 2022 will include the following steps:

  • Online registration
  • Filling up of choice filling and locking
  • Seat allotment
  • Reporting to the allotted institute

Students who want to participate in the counselling procedure of JEE Main must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • They must have qualified in JEE Main 2022.
  • Their All India Rank (AIR) should be within the prescribed range (opening ranks and closing ranks) for the course and for the institute they wish to get admission into.
  • For admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, students must have secured a minimum of 75% marks in the Class 12th/ equivalent examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in their respective Class 12th/ equivalent qualifying examination (as announced by the newly-constituted CSAB on March 22, 2022)
  • SC/ST candidates must have secured at least 65% marks in the Class 12th/ equivalent examination.
  • The counselling procedure of JEE Main will be conducted in online mode and the students will have to register themselves on the official website of JoSAA. The registration process will include steps like online payment of the counselling fee, uploading of required documents, etc.

After the successful registration, students will be required to fill and lock their choices of courses and institutes. They can modify their choices any number of times before the final locking date. The seat allotment will be done based on choices filled and locked by the students, their All India Rank in JEE Main 2022, and the availability of seats.

The seat allotment will be released online on the official website of JoSAA. Students who have been allotted a seat will have to report to the allotted institute with all the required documents and pay the admission fee.

The counselling procedure of JEE Main will be conducted in eight rounds. The first six founds of counselling will be conducted by the JoSAA and you can find the schedule for them on the official website of JoSAA. Students who have not been allotted a seat in the first round can participate in the second round, and so on. The final allotment will be done only after all the eight rounds of counseling have been completed.

The last two rounds of counselling will be conducted by the CSAB for students who want to get admission into NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs - if seats remain vacant after the six rounds of counselling conducted earlier.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced?
JEE Main is the first stage of the two-phase process to get admission into IITs. Students who clear the cutoff marks in JEE Main are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced, which is the second stage. You only need to take the JEE Advanced exam to get admission into IITs.

  2. What is the difference between NITs and IITs?
NITs are National Institutes of Technology while IITs are Indian Institutes of Technology. Both NITs and IITs offer engineering courses at the undergraduate level. Admission into NITs is done based on JEE Main rank while admission into IITs is done based on JEE Advanced rank. IITs are considered to be better than NITs in terms of infrastructure, faculty, and placement opportunities.

  3. Can I get admission into an NIT without giving JEE Advanced?
Yes, you can get admission into an NIT without giving JEE Advanced. To do so, you must have secured a minimum of 75% marks in the Class 12th/ equivalent examination, or be in the top 20 percentile in their respective Class 12th/ equivalent qualifying examination. You will then be eligible to participate in the counselling process of JEE Main.
But your JEE Main rank should be within the opening and closing ranks of the NIT you want to get admission into. Typically, your rank should be less than 1.5 lakh to get into an NIT.

  4. What are the changes in the JEE Main 2022 counselling procedure?
The main change in the JEE Main counselling procedure is that there will be eight rounds of counselling instead of seven rounds. The last two rounds of counselling will be conducted by the CSAB for students who want to get admission into NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs - if seats still remain vacant after the six rounds of counselling conducted earlier.

  5. What is the difference between NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs?
NITs are National Institutes of Technology, IIITs are Indian Institutes of Information Technology and CFTIs are Centrally Funded Technical Institutions. All three types of institutes offer engineering courses. IIITs mainly offer IT-based engineering programs. NITs are considered more prestigious than CFTIs. Call askIITians to know more.
