IIT Bombay is Most Popular with JEE Advanced Toppers, Followed by IIT Delhi

IIT Bombay has been the most popular choice among JEE Advanced toppers for the past few years. Out of the Top 10 JEE Advanced 2021 All India Rank (AIR) holders, 9 chose IIT Bombay as their preferred institute. If you look at the Top 50 JEE Advanced 2021 rank holders, 43 opted for Powai College. More than 50% of the Top 100 JEE Advanced 2021 rankers chose IIT Bombay as their first preference.

IIT Delhi is the second most popular choice with 32 students (from the Top 100 JEE Advanced 2021 rank holders) opting for it.

There is a similar trend in the choice of colleges among JEE Advanced toppers from previous years as well. IIT Bombay has consistently been the first choice for the majority of toppers. In 2020, out of the top 100 JEE Advanced toppers, 61 students chose IIT Bombay as their first preference. IIT Delhi was the second most popular choice with 30 students opting for it. 7 students opted for IIT Madras that year. Interestingly, none of them opted for IIT Kharagpur or IIT Kanpur.

In 2019, out of the top 100 rankers, 64 chose IIT Bombay as their first preference. This was followed by IIT Delhi with 33 students.

The trend indicates that the majority of JEE Advanced toppers prefer IIT Bombay over other Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). This is likely because IIT Bombay is one of the oldest and most prestigious engineering colleges in India.

Why IIT Bombay or IIT Delhi are the popular choices of JEE Advanced toppers?

The majority of the students on the toppers' list are urban dwellers. In 2018, 80.33% of the JEE Advanced qualifiers were from urban backgrounds. Naturally, they gravitate towards metro cities like Mumbai or Delhi.

IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi also offer a wider range of courses as compared to other IITs. Additionally, they have better infrastructure and facilities. This makes them more attractive to students.

Another factor that contributes to the popularity of these two colleges is their location. IIT Bombay is located in the heart of Mumbai, which is a major financial and commercial hub. Similarly, IIT Delhi is located in the capital city of India, making it easily accessible for students from all over the country.

Do you need help with choosing the right IIT?

At askIITians, we recruit the best IITian faculty to mentor our students and help them succeed in their exams. They can also guide you on which IIT is best for you. Here are some general tips that they suggest:

  • Location of IITs: As we shared above, most JEE Advanced qualifiers are urban dwellers and prefer to choose IITs based in metro cities. So, if you are from a big city and can afford to study in one of the IITs located there, it would be a good idea to target those institutes.

On the other hand, many students from small towns get admission to IITs located in remote areas, such as IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Roorkee, and IIT Kharagpur. While these colleges may not be as popular as the ones in metro cities, they are still good options and provide an excellent education.

  • Infrastructure and Facilities: IITs located in big cities typically have better infrastructure and facilities than those located in remote areas. So, if you have the option to choose between two IITs, opt for the one with better infrastructure and facilities.

  • Faculty: The quality of faculty is an important factor to consider while choosing an IIT. All IITs have excellent faculty, but some may be better than others. Do your research and try to find out which IIT has the best faculty in your area of interest. You may talk to seniors or visit the IITs' websites to get more information.

  • Placements: Placements are an important consideration for many students when choosing an IIT. All IITs have good placement records, but some may be better than others. IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi received some of the highest salary packages in 2020 and 2021. So, if you're looking for good placements, these IITs may be a good option for you.

  • Rank: Rank is obviously an important factor to consider while choosing an IIT. But don't just focus on the overall rank of the institute. Look at the departmental rankings as well. For example, if you're interested in computer science, check the departmental rankings of IITs to see which one is better.
