How to choose the best engineering course for you?

While filling up the online form for JEE Main 2022 counselling, candidates will have to indicate the engineering courses and colleges they want to target and their order of preference for them. Here are some of the tips on how to choose the right engineering branch and engineering college for you:

Do you know all the engineering streams and what careers they lead to?

The first step is to know all the engineering disciplines that are available to you. Once you know all your options, it will be easier for you to zero in on the one that best suits your interests and aspirations.

Here is a list of some of the most popular engineering courses:

  • Civil Engineering: You should go for civil engineering if you want to pursue a career in the construction or design industry.
  • Mechanical Engineering: If you are interested in designing and manufacturing machines, then mechanical engineering is the right choice for you.
  • Electrical Engineering: This field is best for those who want to work with electricity and electronics.
  • Electronics and Communication Engineering: The difference between EE and ECE is that the latter deals with communication systems. If you are interested in designing and developing electronic devices, then ECE is the right field for you.
  • Computer Science Engineering: CSE is one of the most popular engineering disciplines and is best suited for those who want to pursue a career in the IT industry.
  • Information Technology: IT is a bit different from CSE. This branch deals with the management and implementation of information systems.
  • Chemical Engineering: Chemical engineering is all about working with chemicals and chemical processes. Chemical engineers are in high demand in industries like petroleum, pharmaceuticals, etc.
  • Biomedical Engineering: As the name suggests, this field is all about working with medical devices and equipment. Biomedical engineers are in high demand in the healthcare industry.
  • Aerospace Engineering: This field is all about designing and developing aircraft and spacecraft. Aerospace engineers are in high demand in the aviation and space industry.

Research on the career prospects of each engineering stream:

After you have made a list of all the possible engineering courses you can pursue, the next step is to do some research on the career prospects of each stream. This will help you understand which field is in demand and which field offers better job opportunities.

Some things you can research are:

  • The employment rate of engineers in each discipline
  • The average salary earned by engineers in each discipline
  • The scope for further studies and research in each discipline

Talk to professionals and students in each field:

Another way to gather information about each engineering discipline is to talk to professionals and students who are already working or studying in that field. They will be able to give you first-hand information about the pros and cons of each field. This will help you make an informed decision.

Make a list of colleges that offer your engineering course of choice:

Once you have decided on the engineering course you want to pursue, the next step is to make a list of all the colleges that offer that course. This will help you narrow down your options and choose the right college for you.

Some things you can keep in mind while making your list are:

  • The reputation and ranking of the college: Make sure to choose a college that has a good reputation and is ranked high by different rating agencies. Some of the best-known rankings for engineering colleges in India are the NIRF Ranking (done by the Ministry of Education, Government of India) and the India Today Best Engineering College Ranking.
  • The placement record of the college: Another important thing to consider is the placement record of the college. Make sure to choose a college that has a good placement record and that placements are offered in companies that you are interested in.
Search for '<Name of the Engineering College> Placements' to find out the placement record of different colleges.

  • The fee structure of the college: Make sure to choose a college that you can afford. NITs charge ₹62,500 per semester if the family income of students is above 5 lakh. Those whose family income is between 1 and 5 lakh will have to pay ₹20,834. Those whose family income is less than 1 lakh or are from SC, ST and PwD categories do not have to pay anything.
At IIIT Delhi, students have to pay ₹2,01,100 per semester, including refundable caution money of ₹10,000, one-time fees of ₹2,000, tuition fee per semester of 1,87,500, other fees per semester of ₹500, and annual fees of ₹1,100. Students with a family income between 6 and 8 lakh rupees and the last school fee paid less than 0.6 lakh rupees per annum can avail of a 25% fee waiver. Those whose family income is up to 6 lakh rupees and the last school fee paid less than 0.45 lakh rupees per annum can avail of a 50% fee waiver. Students who come from BPL (Below the Poverty Line) families do not have to pay anything.
So, look at how much fees you have to pay and whether you are eligible for any fee waiver before making your choice.

  • The location of the college: Another thing to consider is the location of the college. Make sure to choose a college that is located in a city or town that you are comfortable living in.
Some students prefer to stay close to their hometown while others prefer to stay in a big city with better infrastructure as well as job and placement opportunities. So, think about what would work better for you before making your choice.

  • The facilities offered by the college: Make sure to choose a college that offers all the facilities that you need. Some of the things you can look for are good hostel facilities, a well-stocked library, good laboratory facilities, and so on.

We hope this article helped guide you on how to choose the right engineering course and college for you and how to participate in JEE Main 2022 counselling. All the best!
