How to prepare for IIT JEE Main 2014?

If you haven’t yet started preparing for IIT JEE 2014, it’s time to wake up and work hard. The Joint Entrance Exams (JEE) Main is a must for all engineering or architectural aspirants who are targeting IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other centrally funded technical institutions as well as the technology institutes and engineering colleges run by the state governments who have chosen to be a part of the JEE system.

The pen-and-paper based or offline mode of JEE Main 2014 is schedule for April 6 while the computer based test or online mode of JEE Main 2014 will take place on April 9, 11, 12 and 19.

How to prepare for IIT JEE Main 2014

This year more than 14 lakh students are expected to appear for JEE Main making it one of the most competitive exams to crack in the world.

That said, at askIITians, we have repeatedly seen many of the students cracking the exam by following a painstaking IIT JEE Main preparation schedule in the last four to five months. AskIITians offers a rigorous and intensive capsule classroom coaching program called QUARK 2014 for late-starters. Click here to know more about it!

Based on their own experiences as well as experiences of students who have made it through AIEEE and JEE Main in less than six months, here are some suggestion on how to prepare for IIT JEE Main 2014 from now on:

Read JEE Main syllabus thoroughly

First step of IIT JEE 2014 preparation always starts with going through its syllabus carefully. A day spent on working out the JEE syllabus will speed up other parts of your preparation and optimize your efforts.

The syllabus for JEE Main and JEE Advanced is slightly different. If you are targeting IITs, read both of them carefully. If you are solely targeting other engineering institutions, then you only have to go through JEE Main syllabus.

List down the topics and sub-topics you will have to cover in each subject for Class 12 board exams, for JEE Main and for JEE Advanced – in the order exams will take place.

First of all cover the topics that are covered in your Class 12 syllabus too. Then, move on topics covered only in JEE Main. Lastly, go through the topics that are covered only in JEE Advanced syllabus.

  • Form a Study Plan
You are attempting to achieve a feat for which students have been preparing for two years. In fact, many students would have started asking how to prepare for IIT JEE 2014 four years ago. If you want to ace them all, you have to squeeze in all that effort in four to five months you have in hand.

Form a Study Plan

Do remember that you will need to have some days for revision and also some that you will need to prepare exclusively for your board exams (to cover topics not in JEE Main and JEE Advanced and to prepare for other subjects in board exams).

So, if they have studied for two hours daily for 730 days (1460 hours), you will have to cover it all in four months (or 120 days) – about 12 to 13 hours daily with no time to waste.

Devote equal time to all the three subjects. Find out how many topics and sub-topics you will need to cover in a day. Ideally, you should devote two hours to study number of topics for the day in each subject each day and two hours each to solve questions and problems related to the topics you have studied.

As you study a chapter, keep making topic-wise notes for quick revision later. Moreover, when you will write things down, they will stay in your memory better.

One of the smart tips to prepare for IIT JEE 2014 is that you should start practicing questions from previous years’ question papers right away. Every day when you pick up a past year question paper of AIEEE or JEE Main, solve all the questions and numerical related to all the topics you have covered till that date.

  • Get access to the best resources available
When you have less time at hand, it is not advisable to use too many reference books. Where will you find time to find out which topic to cover from which book? Simply start with NCERT books and get access to the study material of a good coaching institute.

AskIITians study material has been designed by ex-IITians and IIT professors. It covers the entire JEE Main and JEE Advanced syllabus and is to-the-point.  The study material is well-researched and can be customised to the needs of students. It also includes short notes and formula sheet at the end of each chapter, which are great tools for memorizing important points and for revision purposes. The study material also includes important questions for JEE Main and JEE Advanced 2014 exam. Besides books, you can subscribe to recorded lectures available in DVD format.

You may also form a study group with your friends who are studying at other prominent coaching institutes and share their notes.

  • Take practice tests and analyze performance

AskIITians test series  offers a set of challenging tests based on the latest pattern of JEE Main exam. After each test, experts offer a detailed analysis report that identifies topics in which students are strong and topics in which they need to improve. It also includes suggestions ways on how to prepare for JEE Main 2014 to optimize one’s performance in the actual exam.

If you cannot access All India Test Series (AITS), you can try solving past years’ AIEEE or JEE Main question papers that are available for free. Compare your answers with the solutions of the respective paper that are available for free too. Analyze your performance and try to find out topics in which you need to work more.

Do not wait too much. Seek help immediately to clear doubts or get your problems solved.

  • Important Topics

Here is the topic-wise weightage analysis of AIEEE and JEE Main question papers from 2008 to 2013 for each subject.

While it is not advisable to leave any topic untouched, you may want to pay more attention to topics from which more questions have been asked.
