Kinematics is one of the easiest and important chapters of Mechanics in the syllabus of IIT JEE, AIEEE and other engineering examinations. The beginners also find it easy and it is very interesting for them to solve numerical problems on them. This chapter is also important from the viewpoint that it is a prerequisite to all other chapters of Mechanics. Moreover the concept of this chapter is useful in the other units of Physics. This chapter can be said to be one of the easiest as it has very few twists and turns.

The branch of mechanics in which the motion of body is studied without the study of the cause of motion is called kinematics. This chapter deals with the fundamental concepts of the motion of a particle in one and two dimensions. Various kinds of motion can be symmetrically grouped under few broad categories. The point of distinction is made on grounds of the velocity vector. On these grounds motion can be one dimensional, two-dimensional or three-dimensional. In this chapter we will study the part of the mechanics which deals only the motion of body and not the cause of motion.

Among other things, we will learn how to describe bodies moving in a straight line, uniform circular motion, the motion of projectiles – to name a few.

These descriptions form the foundation of our study of physics.

Solved examples as usual are very useful as they can reappear in the examination with slight modification.

Following topics are covered under Kinematics:

  1. Introduction to Motion in One Dimension
  2. Graphical Representation and Equations of Motion
  3. Motion under Gravity
  4. Motion in a Straight Line with Acceleration
  5. Motion in Two Dimensions
  6. Motion of Projectile
  7. Circular Motion
  8. Relative Motion
  9. Solved Examples

Kinematics is important from the perspective of scoring high in IIT JEE as there are few concepts which are required to be grasped on which a number Multiple Choice Questions are framed. If we consider the chapters of Kinematics, Newton’s Laws of Motion, and Work Power and Energy together we can say that a good understanding of the concept can help a student to get 20-30 marks varying from one examination to the other. AIEEE and other engineering examinations definitely have 5-7 questions every year directly or indirectly based on these topics. It is very important to master these concepts at early stage as this forms the basis of your preparation for IIT JEE and AIEEE.
