Which molecule has more bond energy – F 2 or Cl 2 ? They have same bond order then how do you determine which has more bond energy ? In which of the following molecules/ ions are all bonds not equal? Give reason. SF 4 SiF 4 XeF 4 BF 4 -

Although both of them have hybridisarion of sp3 containing 3 lone pairs and one bond pair but Cl2 has more bond energy than F2 because Cl2 bond is more stable than F2 bond as chlorine is smaller in size than flourine due to more screening effect in F than Cl..
SF4 has sp3d hybridisation with trigonal bipyramidal geometry containing 2 axial bonds,,2 equatorial bonds and a lone pair along equatorial plane..since axial ones are longer than equatorial thus SF4 is the answer of above problem

Chlorine is larger than flourine.
Cl – 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p5
F  – 1s2 2s2 2p5
Chlorine has 3 shells while flourine has 2 shells and screening effect are same as the orbital before the valence orbital is ‘s’ in both cases so obviously Cl is larger than F. But the answer is correct than Cl2 has more bond energy than F2 but I want to know how.

Flourine is smaller in size and f2 bond length is so small that the lone pairs offer much repulsion and thus its bond energy decreases  considerably than  it ought to be

Same number of lone pairs are present in Cl2 too. Then there also same kind of repulsion should occur and decrease the bond energy. Now how do you that flourine has less bond energy ?

Flourine is smaller in size than chlorine so bond distance will be shorter as compared to in F2 than Cl2...since lone pairs will more closer in F2 than in Cl2 ,,thus will offer more repulsions and decrease its bond energy..

If bonds are near in flourine than in chlorine then regardless of the repulsion, chlorine should have easily breakable bonds as the bonds are long. But that is not what happens.
