Lattice energy is the energy required to break an ionic crystal into its constituent ions. The same amount of energy is released when one gram molecule of the crystal is formed from gaseous ions. The lattice energy of an ionic solid is a measure of the strength of bonds in that ionic compound. It can be measured using Born-Haber's cycle.
Born-Haber cycle can be used to calculate the lattice enthalpy of an ionic compound, from the enthalpies of the various steps involved in the formation of ionic compound

the total amount of energy required to form a solid crystal from its gaseous states
example:for the formaation of the NaCl first the Na is converted from the solid to gaseous state and an electron is removed from it now the Cl is changed to Cl- now with certain amount of enegy the NaCl crystal is formed here energy is reqiured for the formation of the crystal the total enrgy is called as lattice energy
