! gram of dry green algae absorbs 4.7 * 10 -3 mole of CO 2 per hour by photosynthesis. If the fixed carbon atoms were all stored after photosynthesis as starch, (C 6 H 10 O 5 ),how lon would it take for the algae to double their own weight assuming photosynthesis takes place at constant rate?

Moles of CO2 absorbed = 4.7 x 10-3
Since one mole of CO2 has one mole of C while one mole of starch require 6 moles of C.

therefore amount of starch formed in one hour = 4.7 x 10-3 / 6 moles

Weight of starch formed in one hour = 162 x 7.83 x 10-4\
                             = 0.1269gm

For algae to double its weight, it should gain 1 gm
therefore, time require to double its weight = 1/.1269
                                 = 7.88 hrs
