Because of larger surface area the no. of free valencies on an adsorbent increases due to which more amount of adsorbate can be adsorbed on it............ and thus a finely divided substance is more efficient as the adsorbant.

eg: take some water and pour in a piece''s of cotton and take the same amound of cotton round it and add water then weight both the cotton what did you find ?
