Carbon exist as carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO) in nature. So, by finding out the oxidation state of carbon in both,it comes out to be +4 and +2 respectively.Hence,in nature both divalent and tetravalent carbon are present. If you want to know more, carbenes are divalent or bivalent.eg- methylene(CH2) is the simplest carbene.
