Resonance is a phenomenon where a single electronic structure of a molecule cannot account its all properties,so it is represented by two or more electronic structures. But the actual structure of molecule lies somewhere in between these structures.Such molecule is said to exhibit resonance. The various structure are called as canonical structures and the intermediate one is called as resonance hybrid.
Its been found that resonsnce hybrid is more stable than any of the contributing structures. The difference between the energy of most stable contributing structure and resonance hybrid is called as resonance energy.More the resonating structures, greater will be the delocalisation of electrons which in turn lowers the potential energy of the molecule and makes it more stable than any of the contributing structures.Thats why there will be lesser energy and more stability of the resonance hybrid.
