Dear student,
We know that the diastereoisomers arestereoisomersthat are notenantiomers.Though we still use two older prefixes to distinguish between diastereomers, these arethreoanderythro. For instance, in the case of carbohydrates, when we drawtheFischer projections, the erythro isomer has two identical substituents on the same side and the threo isomer has them on opposite sides.Wherease when we draw it as a zig-zag chain, the erythro isomer has two identical substituents on different sides of the plane.
