Alkyl halides are the organic compounds which are formed by replacement of one or more hydrogen atoms with equal no. of halogen atoms.They are represented by general formula RX.
Reduction of alkyl halides---
Haloalkanes can be reduced by following reagents-
1).Reduction with hydrogen in the presence of metal catalyst like Ni,Pd or Pt
CH3CH2Br + H2 -----------> CH3CH3 + HBr
2).With zinc copper couple and ethyl alcohol-
CH3CH2Br + 2H ------------> CH3CH3 + HBr
3).HI in presence of red phosphorus-
CH3CH2Br + HI -------------> CH3CH3 + I2
