Well...I and most of the students decide it by observing the no. of pi-bonds that carbon atom has.
If no pi-bond, then sp3; if one, then sp2; and if two, then sp.
Eg. CH2=C=CH-CH3 (But-1,2-diene), In this compound (from left to right) the 1st C-atom is having 1 pi-bond, so its hybridisation state is sp2. The 2nd C-atom is having 2 pi-bonds, so sp. 3rd is also having 1 pi-bond, so sp2 and the 4th C-atom has none, so sp3.
Hope that’ll help.
