Dear anuvrat

no.of isomers for a organic compound can be calculated by using formula 2n

 where n : no.of chiral / asymmetric carbon.

Asymmetric carbon is the carbon atom whose 4 valencies are satisfied by 4 different monovalent atoms or groups.

 Ex. : 1. lactic acid CHCH3OHCOOH

It contains 1 chiral carbon, hence 2n i.e. 21 = 2 optical isomers are possible

         2. glucose contain 4 chiral carbons, hence 24 = 16 optical isomers are possible etc.

All the best.
