Dear vikash,

In presence of alcoholic KCN alkyl halides gives gives alkyl cyanides. But in presence of AgCN (alcoholic) we get the formation of alkyl isocyanide.

C2H5Br   + KCN  -----> C2H5CN  +  KBr

C2H5Br  + AgCN  ------->  C2H5NC  +  AgBr

CN- being an ambidient nucleophile and the Ag--C bond being very strong does not cleave readily and so the isocyanide is formed. But the K-C bond being ionic cleaves readily to give the nitrile.
