Hello.This problem can be solved only and only by method of Integration.If you have not learnt integration,you have to learn it first.
The initial and final positions as given in question are X= a and X2 = b and force is 2x.
Work done (W)  = $$\int_{a}^{b} F dx$$ F. dx
 
       So, W = $$\int_{a}^{b} 2x dx$$
W =\left [ x^{_{2}} \right ] with upper limit b and lower one a
By solving we get that wok done is b- a2
