A canon fires a shell with a speed of 84m/s. When the canon is inclined at 45 degrees, the horizontal distance covered is observed as 630m. What is the percentage decreeas in horizontal distance observed due to air resistance? Please explain with process.

CORRECTIONS MADE.

You must calculate Horizontal distance (Range) when air resistance did not exist.

Range = [ (Initial Velocity of Projection)2 Sin(2 x Angle of Projection) ] / Acceleration due to Gravity.

Take g = 9.8 m/s2.
Theoretical Range = 720 metres = Rthe.

The observed range is 630 metres = Robs.

The %age fall in range due to air resistance is equal to [ (Rthe – Robs)/Rthe ] x 100 = 12.5%
