How you walk ? because of friction . actually that friction is the horizontal component of the force applied by earth on us . You press the earth downwards and earth pushes you in opposite direciton whose component comes in forward direction and you walk. When you will see the snake you actually pushes the ground from your toe so that the horizontal component of the force pushed by earth is opposite to your motion and you stop.
