bold letters mean vector down everywhere.
suppose you are given that a swimmer is moving with a velocity of v1 w.r.t to river and river is at v2. Then as per the concept of relative velocity the velocity of man w.r.t ground = v1 +v2
now you break this into x and y components and apply the equation of motion in both directions. this will give you x and y corodinate of man at any time t . remove t from the two equations and you get a relaiton between the x and y coordinate which is the trajectory.
