It is because of the spin. The electrons while spinning creates a magnetic field which can be cancelled by an oppositely spinning electrons.
In paramagnetic substances , there are unpaired electrons i.e. there is a net spin ≠ 0.Thus, magnetic field created by the unpaired electron does not get cancelled by an oppositely spinning electron & thus materials with an unpaired electron posses some magnetic properties & become paramagnetic.
