Coordination number is the characteristic property shown by coordination compounds or complexes. These complexes consist of central metal ion or electron pair donor called as ligand. The number of bonds from the metal ion to the ligand is called the coordination number of the complex.
The maximum coordination number is the largest possible number of such bonds. Most common coordination numbers are 4 and 6 but others are also possible. It is observed that smallest atoms have maximum coordination number of 4 and larger atoms have 6.The largest atoms show the coordination number as high as 8.
