As mentioned in class 12 ncert N2 has effective 2Ppi-2Ppi bonding but in case of phosphorus 3p orbitals are involved and bonding is not so effective

Actually N2 is 2nd row element and P is 3rd row element in periodic table. Due to smaller  size of 2p orbital of N aton, it can easily form
N-N multiple bond, i,e, triple bond. So its a diatomic molecule. Whereas P has 3p orbital which is larger in size, it cant form muktiple bond due to inefficient orbital overlap. As a result, it form P-P single bond to fulfill the octate rule and form a polymeric structure. That is why N2 gas and P4 solid.
