Sulfurorsulphuris achemical elementwith the symbolSandatomic number16. It is anabundant,multivalentnon-metal. Undernormal conditions, sulfur atoms form cyclic octatomic molecules with chemical formula S8. Elemental sulfur is a bright yellowcrystallinesolid when at room temperature. Chemically, sulfur can react as either anoxidantorreducing agent. Itoxidizesmostmetalsand severalnonmetals, includingcarbon, which leads to its negative charge in mostorganosulfur compounds, but itreducesseveral strongoxidants, such asoxygenandfluorine.
Purified and precipitated sulfur is used in ointments and dusting powders for treating certain skin diseases (seborrhea, psoriasis), in a powder used against helminthic invasions (enterobiasis), and in solutions for the fever therapy of progressive paralysis.
