Hi

Trivalent state is the most stable state . in this state  it has strong tendency to form complexes whose ligand rates of exchange are low. they form octahedral complexes of coordination no. 6. it is largely because of their kinetic inertness that these compounds persist for longer durations in solutions even in thermodynamically unstable conditions.
