actually the exponential function i.e a^x is defined for all x belonging to the set of real numbers where (a > 0 ). and therefore it has  such a domain. the fact that its graph never toches  the x axis is not the general reason. in short whenever you have to find the domain of any function just look for the points or the interval where it would not be defined and then just exclude it from the set of real numbers. and dont go for such facts.
