Photons, with a continuous range of frequencies, are made to pass through a sample of rarefied hydrogen. The transitions, shown here, indicate three of the spectral absorption lines in the continuous spectrum.Identify the spectral series, of the hydrogen emission spectrum to which each of these three lines correspond. Also Explain.

Dear student,
The wavelength of light emitted by Hydrogen is given by:
{1 \over \lambda} = R \left( {1 \over (n^\prime)^2} - {1 \over n^2} \right) \qquad \left( R = 1.097373 \times 10^7 \ \mathrm{m}^{-1} \right)
When n = 1, n’=2, we have the Lymann Series.
When n = 2, n’=3, we have the Balmer Series.
When n = 3, n’=4, we have the Paschen Series.
Regards
Sumit
