In which of the following complexes crystal field splitting energy does not exceed pairing energy i) [PtCl4]2- ii) [AgF4]- iii) [Co(ox)3]3- iv) [CoF6]3- According to me option iii) has to be correct, since (ox) is a strong field ligand, stronger than Halogens. But the solution given to me says option iv) is correct. Please explain why.

Pairing energy is always constant, because it is the energy required to pair two electrons (like charge) of opposite spin. So the variable here in each case is the splitting energy. The splitting energy is greater than pairing energy only when it is a lowspin complex, and less than pairing energy when it is high spin complex. The only low spin complex is [CoF6]3- (sp3d2)
