Huge stars when they die usually explode in whats called a super nova spreading there gas and dust to from new stars and planets. Huge stars do not tend to live as long.

Average size stars like the sun live longer but they do not have a super nova they instead expand huge and puff of their gas and matter. When they are in that stage they are called red giants.

When this phase ends they go into a white dwarf stage and all that is left a white hot core no bigger that the Earth, it eventually cools and our solar system will be dark . When our star the sun goes into the red giant stage it will most likely engulf the earth.

Some super huge mega stars cannot support their weight so they collapse on them selves and turn in to black holes.

The whiter a star appears the younger and hotter it is. Yellowish stars are middle aged and cooler such as the sun. Red stars are in the red giant phase and are even cooler and are dying.

Star can range in size from 12 miles in Diameter (neutron stars) to the point where if they took the place of the sun, it would engulf the inner planets, (Betelgeuse) and quite possibly even bigger.
