Dear student,

The electric field at the center due to the two charges placed diagonally opposite will cancel each other. Thus the electric field be due to only one of the charges and equal to

\dfrac{kq}{r^2}=\dfrac{kq}{(\dfrac{a}{\sqrt{2}})^2}=\dfrac{2kq}{a^2}
