specific rotation is a property of a chiral chemical compound. It is defined as the change in orientation of monochromatic plane-polarized light, per unit distance–concentration product, as the light passes through a sample of a compound in solution. If a compound is able to rotate plane-polarized light, it is said to be “optically active”.
Specific rotation is an intensive property, distinguishing it from the more general phenomenon of optical rotation.

have’nt u used this concept in organic chemistry the term specific rotation is used to compare the rotational effect of all optically active substances. Specific rotation for a given wavelength of light at a (remember its all about the stated it could vary over the small changings too)given temperature is defined as the rotation produced by one-decimeter length of the liquid column containing 1 gram of the active material in 1cc of the solution.

[α]D = specific rotation, i.e. the rotation observed for a 1 g/ml solution of a ... αobs = observed rotation of a solution at a concentration or pathlength other than 1.
