they are diffrent configurations that are required to operate the electric circuit properly , 
in series u have overall resi more than the single and in parallel u have overall resi less than the single . 
and , this is required to opperate the household electric circuit , 
assume in your house if one appliance stops working then other appliances running properly , thats due to this configuration arrengement , 
else , if one appliances will stop wrking then others also stops working , and this will prevent you to do the usefull work .

Resistances are connected inn various ways according to situation.
Resistances are connected in series in cases of fuse and stabiizers in order to keep the other appliances safe without damaging.
 Whereas in home distribution box; transformer near ur house; the electrical connections in ur home as connected in parallel as if one damages also , the other works with efficiency.
