In a body undergoing both translation and rotation, an imaginary line that is supposed to be rigidly united with the body and which is at rest, at that given instant is called the instantaneous axis of rotation.

So, for all practical purposes, the motion of the body can be assumed to be pure rotation about that line at that instant.
