yes it ca have this type of situtation .best example is when u drive any vehical ,when u apply breck on it then at this instant vehical has velocity and acceleration in just apposite direction.it is the same case which u are asking.acceleration in apposite direction means retardation. vehicle keep moving in the apposite direction of acceleration until its velocity become zero .
