You can definitely clear JEE only and only by self study. But most probably you will not get a good rank. Coaching institute helps to maintain regularity and it also provides you the specialized material for JEE preparation, which is very important if you are looking for a good rank.

Rank matters a lot. Don't think that if you are in those probably 10,000 students(out of the 13 lakh students that appeared), then you are a genius. Think that you are towards the end among those 10,000 brains.

So, coaching is highly recommended if you really want a RANK in IIT-JEE.
Rest is up to you. There have been instances(although very few) where people have secured single digit ranks without any formal IIT-JEE coaching.
